The Fulbright Finland Scholarship Award Grants is open for  U.S. students who hold a minimum of Bachelor’s degree on their previous institutions. The Grants aims to target talented graduating U.S. students who may be interested in having the degree in Finland.

Opportunities in Finland

Government of Finland provides numerous study and research programs with a wide range of disciplines. Universities in Finland offers good standard of quality programs in humanities and social sciences, fine and performing arts, as well as science and technology. Language Requirement

As an international student or researcher, you do not necessarily need to know Finnish or Swedish in order to be able to study in Finland. Many universities in Finland offers their programs in English which is widely spoken in academic circles and in the country as a whole. Candidates should consult the academic department as to the availability of courses and the possibility to conduct research in English.

Cost of study and standard of living in Finland

Non-EU/EEA student interested to English-taught Master’s degree program in Finland needs to complete a full degree at a Finnish institution, you will be required to pay tuition fees (app. 4 000 – 21 000 USD/year).

Finnish universities provide numerous scholarships for full tuition. Also, the Fulbright Finland Scholarship Awards are  funded in partnership with Finnish universities include a full tuition scholarship as part of the Fulbright grantee benefit package.

In Finland, Doctoral studies are free of charge, or degree courses offered in Finnish or Swedish. Also exchange students from other countries are not required to pay tuition fees.

Eligibility

The grantee’s Fulbright period in Finland can have one of the following purposes:
  • to complete a full graduate degree program in Finland*
  • to take courses in a Finnish university as a non-degree student
  • to pursue research
  • to pursue research and take courses
* Fulbright scholarship grant (monthly allowance) is awarded for one full academic year. However, in many cases Fulbright grant includes a full tuition waiver for the full Master’s degree (2 years). Doctoral studies are in any case tuition-free in Finland. Please see further information on the Fulbright benefits in the sections below and information on cost of study at Study in Finland website.

In addition to grants funded in full by Fulbright Finland, there are five sponsored award categories:
  1. Fulbright-Tampere University Graduate Award 
  2. Fulbright-EDUFI Fellowships
  3. Fulbright-University of Helsinki Graduate Award
  4. Fulbright-University of Turku Graduate Award
  5. The Fulbright-Lappeenranta University of Technology Graduate Award

How to Apply

The Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship Program is targeted on the U.S. side by the Institute of International Education (IIE), which controls all the stages of application process and pre-screens applicants.

Interested Candidates will apply either through a U.S. institution or At-Large. If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. college or university, you are required to apply through that institution, even if you are not currently resident there. If you are not currently enrolled, you may apply through your alma mater, provided that the institution is willing and able to accommodate alumni applications.
